In the early hours of Friday, August 1st, 2025, residents of the Janyau community in Gusau, Zamfara State, successfully thwarted a criminal attempt to sabotage a public power transformer. Their timely intervention culminated in the arrest of two suspects, while a third remains at large.
According to eyewitness accounts, the plot was uncovered when the transformer began emitting unusual mechanical sounds, triggering immediate concern among nearby residents. One of the first responders, Malam Isiya, played a pivotal role in mobilizing the community and confronting the culprits.
The apprehended individuals have been identified as Dahiru Abdullahi, aged 24, from Kofar Sauri in Katsina State, and Abdul Salaam Saleh, aged 32, of Kofar Manda, also in Katsina. Malam Abdullahi sustained life-threatening electrocution injuries during the act and is currently receiving medical treatment at the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) Clinic in Gusau. Due to an ongoing strike by healthcare workers in public institutions across Zamfara State, he was unable to secure admission into a general hospital. As of the time of reporting, only his mother had been contacted by law enforcement authorities.
Saleh suffered a fractured wrist during a physical confrontation with community members. He is presently in police custody and is reportedly cooperating with ongoing investigations.
The third suspect, identified as Doctor Zayyanu, remains at large. Preliminary investigations indicate that he is a native of Gusau and had been temporarily lodged at Travellers Hotel prior to the incident. Authorities suspect he may have direct ties to the host community of the targeted transformer. Intelligence efforts are actively underway to ensure his prompt apprehension.
In recognition of their exemplary conduct, the Janyau community has received widespread commendation for their restraint and orderly response in the face of criminal provocation.
During a briefing with law enforcement officials, the Zamfara Regional Manager of Kaduna Electric, Mr. Gaddafi Ibrahim Saminaka, lauded the community for their vigilance and adherence to due process. “Their unwavering commitment to safeguarding public assets is commendable and their avoidance of extrajudicial actions serve as a model for other communities. We urge the public to emulate this standard,” he stated.
Mr. Saminaka further appealed to the general populace to remain alert and report any suspicious activity near power infrastructure to the relevant security agencies or the nearest Kaduna Electric office. He reaffirmed the company’s dedication to the protection and integrity of its installations across the state.
Nigeria Police authorities have confirmed that
investigations remain active and have assured the public of their resolve to
apprehend the fleeing suspect in due course.
