In line with this year’s International Women’s Day theme, ‘Give to Gain’, the women of Kaduna Electric organised a community medical outreach in Gonin Gora, Kaduna, to commemorate the occasion and promote health and wellbeing among residents.

The outreach programme, part of Kaduna Electric’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, included health awareness talks as well as the distribution of essential medications and preventive materials, including mosquito nets, anti-malaria drugs, among others to over 300 residents.

Speaking during the outreach, Mrs. Asma’u Mohammed, Acting Head, Corporate Communications, emphasised the importance of hygiene and community health. She noted that Kaduna Electric has previously supported communities through initiatives such as blood donation drives, provision of reading glasses, back-to-school donations of writing materials, and distribution of food, toiletries, blankets, and other essential items to orphanages and less privileged members of society

“As a responsible corporate organisation, Kaduna Electric remains committed to improving the wellbeing of the communities we serve. We also call on members of the community to support our efforts by paying their electricity bills and avoiding energy theft, so that the company can continue implementing impactful initiatives that benefit residents,” she said.

The outreach also focused on addressing common health challenges affecting women, promoting preventive healthcare, and encouraging open conversations on wellbeing. Participants received guidance on hygiene practices, disease prevention, and general health maintenance, reinforcing Kaduna Electric’s commitment to community development beyond electricity distribution.

Expressing his appreciation, the Village Head of Gonin Gora, Mr. John Gaza Yusuf thanked Kaduna Electric for the outreach programme, describing it as timely and impactful. He called on other organisations to emulate the company’s gesture in supporting community health and development.

Through this initiative, Kaduna Electric not only marked International Women’s Day but also demonstrated its dedication to empowering communities, promoting health, and contributing to sustainable development across its host areas.

Kaduna Electric Strengthens Partnership with Zazzau Emirate

By Jamila Bala

In a strategic move to improve service delivery and foster community relations, the Regional Manager of Kaduna Electric (Kaduna Region), Mr. Zanna Ashemi, paid a courtesy visit to His Royal Highness, the Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, at his palace in Zaria recently.

The delegation, led by the Regional Manager, Mr. Zanna Ashemi, emphasized the need for a stronger partnership between the utility company and the traditional institution to address the challenges of power distribution and the rising cases of vandalism.

During the visit, Mr. Ashemi expressed his appreciation for the Emir’s consistent fatherly role in maintaining peace and progress within the emirate. He noted that the visit was primarily aimed at fostering a collaborative relationship to ensure that customers within the Zaria region receive more stable and reliable electricity.

"The Zazzau Emirate is a critical hub for our operations. We are here to reaffirm our commitment to improving the quality of power supply and to seek your Royal Highness’s blessing and cooperation in sensitizing the public on their roles as stakeholders in the power sector," Ashemi stated.
The dialogue between the Kaduna Electric team and the Emir focused on several thematic areas vital to the energy sector.

The Regional Manager, highlighted the need for continuous public education regarding billing processes, the importance of regular payments, and the transition to more efficient metering systems.
The discussions also touched on the importance of energy conservation. Customers are encouraged to adopt energy saving habits such as switching off high drain appliances when not in use to reduce their monthly costs and alleviate pressure on the national grid.

Mr Ashemi   lamented the rising cases of meter bypass and illegal connections, which significantly drain the company’s revenue and lead to transformer overloads.
He also made a major plea to the Emirate to help curb the activities of vandals. The destruction of transformers and theft of aluminum conductors have frequently plunged entire communities into prolonged darkness.

"Providing protection for our equipment is Kaduna Electric’s responsibility, but safeguarding these installations from vandals within the community is a collective responsibility of the residents," Mr. Ashemi stated.

In Response, HRH Amb. Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli welcomed the delegation and commended Kaduna Electric for the initiative. He acknowledged that while electricity is the backbone of economic activity, the community must also do its part to protect the equipment serving them.
The Emir assured the team of the Emirate’s full support, promising to use the traditional administrative structure from District Heads to Ward Heads to educate the populace on the importance of protecting power infrastructure and discouraging energy theft.

"We are partners in progress. When the lights are on, our businesses thrive and our people are happy. We will continue to advocate for the protection of these assets," the Emir remarked.

The Emir of Zazzau also raised a point of significant concern for his subjects. With the Sallah celebrations approaching, His Royal Highness pleaded with the Regional Manager to ensure a steady power supply, specifically requesting a promise that the "lights would not be taken" during the festive period.

Mr. Ashemi acknowledged the request but took the opportunity to make a reciprocal plea. He urged the Emir to use his influential platform to encourage residents to pay their electricity bills promptly. He noted that consistent revenue collection is the "fuel" that enables the company to maintain the grid and fulfill the Emir’s request for uninterrupted power during celebrations.

The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to cooperation. The Emirate Council promised to sensitize the public on the dangers of energy theft and the importance of protecting community transformers, while Kaduna Electric pledged to prioritize technical efficiency and customer transparency.
